Every day we communicate in at least one language.  To do so, there are 4 different skills that are used.

• Listening
• Speaking
• Reading
• Writing

While it is true, that you can survive knowing how to use all four of these skills, arguments have been made that the quality of communication comes with the effective integration of all four of these skills.  When you consider integrating these 4 different skills, there are 2 variables to think about one is method of communication and the other is direction of communication. 

The method of communication refers to whether the communication is oral or written. The direction of communication refers to whether the communication is produced or received.  The relationship between these 4 skills can be represented in picture.
