Unexpected Actions

Whenever you want to express an action that is unexpected, unplanned or accidental in Spanish like “Mycell phone fell from my hands” you would need to use the “se me”structure: “Se me cayó el celular”.

In these cases, the thing or things related to the accident are the subject of the sentence.  The verb uses the reflexive structure. For this reason, these sentences always have to be conjugated in third person singular or third person plural. The person or the “victim” of the accident is going to bethe indirect object.

Lets use the same example: “ The cellphone fell”. If we use the reflexive structure, the Spanish sentence would be: “El celular se cayó”. Now, who is the victim of the accident?: me - “Se me cayó el celular”.

Another example: “Your clothes got wet”, would be: “Se te mojó la ropa”. Some verbs that follow this pattern in Spanish include:

  • acabarse “to run out”
  • pararse “ tostop”
  • perderse “to lose”
  • descomponerse “to fall apart”...
Have a great time using these in your conversations.  See how you can apply this concept.
