Ser and estar: To be or To be, that is the question

The verb “to be” is said using two different verbs in Spanish: “ser y estar”, both are irregular verbs and are used regularly. Here are some the different ways you can use ser and estar:

 

Ser
  1. To describe, identify or define a person, object, place or animal, according to its inherent characteristics or qualities, we use this verb combined with adjectives.

  2. To indicate nacionalities, materials, professions and religious or political orientation.

Ejemplos:

Yo (I)

soy

Yo soy un hombre fuerte pero no soy valiente.

I am a strong man but I am not brave.

Tú (you)

eres

Tú eres muy inteligente, eres muy buena en la escuela.

You are very intelligent, you're very good at school.

Usted-él-ella

(you-he-she)

es

Mi perro es muy cariñoso con ustedes pero ustedes son muy cruéles con él.

My dog is very affectionate with you but you are very cruel to him.

Nosotros-Nosotras (we)

somos

Nosotros somos buenos atletas pero no somos profesionales.

We are good athletes but we are not professionals.

Ustedes-ellos-ellas (you-they)

son

Esas mesas son de madera y son del restaurante de mi familia.

These tables are wooden and are restaurant my family.

 

Estar

1. To tell the location of people, objects, business, and animals.

2. We use it with adjectives to express mental, physical and emotional conditions.

Yo estoy en la casa de mi novio, estoy exactamente en la sala.

I am in my boyfriend's house, I am exactly in the livingroom.

Tú (you)

estás

Tú estás muy contento con tu nueva casa porque está cerca del bar.

You are very happy with your new house because it is near the bar.

Usted-él-ella

(you-he-she)

está

Ella está muy triste porque su papá está enfermo.

She is very sad because his dad is sick.

Nosotros-Nosotras (we)

estamos

Nosotras estamos muy delgadas con la nueva dieta de ese doctor.

We are very thin with the new diet from that doctor.

Ustedes-ellos-ellas (you-they)

están

Esos gatos están locos, siempre están encima del televisor.

These cats are crazy, they are always above the TV.
