Present progressive: Regular verbs -ir-

In our third Spanish grammar tutorial on Present Progressive verbs, we will be discussing IR verbs.  If you haven't checked them out, check out our tutorials on AR verbs  and ER verbs .

The present progressive tense expresses an action that is being developed at present.  Remember, the present progressive tense is usually used with temporary action which began recently and will end soon.  In Spanish you form the present progressive using the verb “estar  + regular verb + iendo

Look at the following chart:

 

Pronombres

Escribir (to eat)

Vivir (to live)

Yo (I)

Yo estoy escribiendo rápido.

(I am writing quickly.) 

Yo estoy viviendo en Costa Rica.

(I am living in Costa Rica.)

(You)

estás escribiendo rápido.

(You are writing quickly.) 

estás viviendo en Costa Rica.

(You are living in Costa Rica.) 

Él / Ella / Usted

(He/She/You)

Ella está escribiendo rápido.

(She is writing quickly.) 

Usted está viviendo en Costa Rica.

(You (formal) are living in Costa Rica). 

Nosotros/Nosotras

(We)

Nosotros escribiendo rápido.

(We are writing quickly.) 

Nosotras estamos viviendo en Costa Rica.

(We are living in Costa Rica.) 

Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes

(They/You)

Ustedes están escribiendo rápido.

(They/you (plural) are writing quickly.) 

Ellos están viviendo en Costa Rica.

(They are living in Costa Rica.) 

Pay attention!!

Just like in AR verbs and ER verbs, you have to add "ando" to the root of the verb.  Try to conjugate these verbs in present progressive:

 

Verbos regulares

Presente progresivo

yo + estar + asistir (to attend)


tú + estar + describir (to describe)


él + estar + reunir (to unite, reunite)


nosotros + estar + insistir (to insist)


ustedes + estar + resumir (to summarize)
